Her Goes Nothing 5

April 2nd 2017

OK, I’m sorry, I’m not good at delivering bad news, especially about myself, so it has been quite a while since we finished our do nothing vacation. Please bear with me as I make the necessary excuses for not blogging sooner. When we did get home on the 3rd of March almost a month ago we found the ceiling in our bedroom down on the bed and our bed full of water. You see, three days before we returned there was quite a bad storm here and it removed a number of shingles from the roof and the rain came in, caused a considerable mess in our bedroom. So our nothingness turned quickly into a lot of somethingness. For the next 4 weeks we were living in a bit of turmoil with all the bedroom furniture in the dining room and contractors and insurance adjusters coming and going. I think we survived quite well sleeping on an air mattress in the small bedroom. Any ways, we got to sleep on our new bed in our newly refinished bedroom last Tuesday and things have since regained some sort of resemblance to normal and I have found time to tell you all about it.
Now having given you all the necessary excuses for my tardiness let me tell you about the rest of our trip. It will be very shot as in all reality it is only one day of travel since I last blogged. We left Suffolk VA. on Friday the 3rd of March and drove all the way home. It snowed in Virginia and it snowed in West Virginia, then it snowed in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York. We crossed the border into Ontario and the stars were shining, the roads were clear and dry, it was like driving in to another world, so all that snow has to have been Trump’s fault, I can think of no other reason.
Well you know what happened after that so all I can say now is Thank you for traveling with us through this period of doing “Nothing”. We have a couple of small projects to take care of here at HQ then we will take a week of time when we will travel to Sask. to attend the Graduation ceremonies of our Oldest Grandson, Brody, who is graduating from Briercrest  Bible College in Carenport Sask.   Please pray for us as we travel and please pray for Brody as he contemplates just what God is calling him to in the near future and beyond.

God bless you all, please keep praying for us as we pray for you.

Here goes nothing 4

March 1st 2017
Well back at ya one more time. We have now completed the first leg of our return from “Nothingness”. Let me tell you, this doing “Nothing” is quite time consuming and requires a fair amount of physical input. I think, though, I have become somewhat accustom to the whole concept and can appreciate how some people would find vacationing to be a requirement in life. That is not to say I will grab wholeheartedly onto the concept but will find it considerably more difficult, in the future, to condemn the practice as frivolous and financially  irresponsible.  OK, enough nonsense, I’ll just tell you about it and you can judge for yourself.
From Orlando we drove down to the Port of Palm Beach where we boarded the Grand Celebration, a cruise ship, bound for the Bahamas. The trip was only 3 days and 2 nights and only made one stop, in Freeport, in The Grand Bahamas. It was a fun filled 3 days with almost nonstop entertainment and all the food you could eat all of the time. We spent time just lying in the sun, splashing in the hot tub and just staring at the stars in what seemed the darkest of endless nothing. How appropriate, we thought, for midway through a trip designed to experience the fullness of “Nothingness”.
As I promised “ Applejack goes to the Bahamas”

Now, that's a boat

Going cruising

On The Grand Bahamas Island

Where's the paddles

Sun bathing on the upper deck

Returning from a cruise of a lifetime we drove from The Port of Palm Beach to Daytona Beach, Florida where we spent the next few days looking out over the white sand beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, just trying to catch up on some rest.  We did see the Daytona International Speedway as we drove past on International Speedway Boulevard  but aside from spending a couple of hours walking the beach we did almost absolutely “Nothing” and found that to be fully relaxing as we prepared for the final destination of our quest for “Nothing”, Cancun Mexico.
And now “Applejack goes to the races”

Things fly by

Swimming in the Atlantic

Walking on the beach

We left Daytona at 4:30 in the morning to drive to Orlando Int. Airport and from there we flew to Cancun Mexico. Yes, my arms were tired by the time we got there. This portion of our “nothing” filled vacation was the highlight of the trip. We did some walking on the beach and the gulf course, where we found a good number of iguanas and even saw a saltwater crocodile sunbathing on the shores of the lagoon. We took a lot of pictures of iguanas and I’m sure the Mexicans wondered why, because it would be like taking pictures of gophers in Saskatchewan. We spent an awesome 5 days and 4 nights in one of the most awesome places in God’s great creation. Should we decide to do “nothing” ever again I think that will be the place to do it. We are now in Virginia, heading home and will catch up with you once we reach the Homeland.
God bless you all, please keep praying for us as we pray for you.

Now the last stop “Applejack goes to Mexico”

Here goes nothing 3

Feb. 20th 2017Well, here we are again. We spent almost a week at Summer Bay Resort in Orlando and in that time we took the opportunity to take an air boat tour of the Everglade, where we saw so much wildlife it was hard to imagine. We saw snakes and all kinds of birds and yes a number of alligators, all living in harmony in the swamp. Andy, our air boat guide and operator, who you will meet in the following pictures, knew exactly where to find different animals and birds and was able to drive the boat right up to each of them. You remember in the last blog I told you we have had a little company along with us and her name is Applejack and that Applejack is a small stuffed toy that belongs to our youngest Granddaughter Abby and that you will find that Applejack is an accomplished photo bomber. Applejack has lived up to that reputation and has been able to bomb almost all the photos we take. So much so that we have renamed this segment of the blog “Applejack Goes to”In this case it’s “Applejack Goes To The Swamp”

Getting ready to go. (are you sure these gators don't like the taste of pony)

Nesting sandhill crane

Look it's a gator. (this one is about 7 ' long)

Applejack's brand new best friend Andy

From there we went up to see Orlando from the top. The Coke Cola Orlando Eye is a thing that kinda looks like a Farris wheel but is really, really big. It moves real slow and never stops, you just hop on as the air conditioned capsule goes by. It then takes you up 400 feet (that’s what they call them down here), back up in the good ole North we would say 122 meters but it wouldn’t sound nearly as impressive. Anyways, it takes you up so high you can see for miles and miles and even more kilometers.
We call this part “Applejack Goes To The Top”
The Coke Cola Orlando Eye

Don't let go Grandpa

Look how far I can see
The next day we went to a Disneyworld theme park called Epcot. Now I have to tell you this. There are two particular members of our family who have taken almost all of the other members of the family to Disneyworld or Disneyland so, after waiting for what seemed to be a lifetime for our turn (now I’m really not trying to make anyone or two feel guilty for the neglect, I mean oversite) we decided to do it on our own. We caught a shuttle from the resort and arrived at the park about 11:00 AM and knowing that the bus wasn’t coming back till almost 10:00 PM we set out to see a world we will only see once. It really was a great day. We did things we couldn’t have imagined doing before; we saw things we couldn’t even imagine existed, and we went places we could have only hoped to go, like Mars. On the training flight, Gail was the commander, I was the engineer and our pilot and caption was a little girl and her mother. Applejack had to take her place in the compartment in front of Gail where all your belongings have to be stowed.  We watched the amazing closing fireworks on the lagoon and then made our way, on what was left of our completely worn out feet, to the parking lot which I’m sure was somehow miraculously moved much further from the park than it was when we arrived. The following day we didn’t leave the resort.  We just sat around the pool and in the pool, trying to regain some resemblance to what we used to call feet.
Now “Applejack goes to Disneyworld”
Space Ship Earth (an interesting ride)

Ya! Birds at Disney too

Where else you going to find Mickey

Fireworks to end an awesome day

On the last day of our stay in Orlando we went to Gatorland.  Gatorland is the oldest theme park in Florida, and has an uncountable number of gators living there.  From gators just hatched and only 5-6 inches, opps, 127-152 Millimeters and weighing only ounces (Grams) to Gators 14 feet long (4.26m) weighing in at 1100 pounds (500 Kilograms) and every inch and milometer between. Once again we walked and walked then rode a train (the Gatorland Express). We watched Gator wrestlers, wrestling alligators, I mean, what else is one going to do with a gator.  We saw snakes and turtles and birds galore. We even saw Big Foot, that’s right Big foot and now we know why they can’t find him in the west anymore. He’s in Florida! The next day we left for Palm Beach for a week-end cruise, so stay tuned for “Applejack Goes to The Bahamas”

God bless you all, please keep praying for us as we pray for you.
But now “Applejack Goes Gator Hunting”

Off to Gatorland with Grandma

Look a baby gator (that don't scare me
But this one does
Dont let me fall
Slow going here
Big Foot (See toll ya)

Here goes nothing 2

Feb. 12th 2017
Having spent a number of days with Kym and the boys in Suffolk VA we headed South with lots of time to get to our destination at Summer Bay Resorts in Orlando Florida. Although we are in no way inclined to be extravagant we quickly discovered that the least expensive of the motels along the way were in fact the cheapest and not at all worth the small amount of money paid. “Once bit twice shy”, not for me, I booked a second night through expedia.ca and got the same thing only worse. The good thing was, we had each other’s shoulders to cry on. Aside from that, the trip south from VA was next thing to perfect. So, from Ontario through 8 states and now in Florida the sunshine state we have had little hardship to overcome and so far find ourselves still able to endure one another’s company. The temperature here upon our arrival was a mere 81 degrees F but I think we will be able to endure the hardship.
We have had a little company along the way, her name is Applejack. Applejack is a small stuffed toy that belongs to our youngest Granddaughter Abby. You will find that Applejack is an accomplished photo bomber. She gets herself in almost all of the photos taken along the way and especially the ones we want to share with you.
This is the very first day of that doing “nothing” we talked about in the past few blogs and I think I could quickly get use to it, but I don’t know about Gail, she seems to keep real busy keeping me busy doing “nothing”.
Well, I’ll post a few pictures with this and bid you a fine farewell for now.

God bless you all, please keep praying for us as we pray for you.

Here Goes "Nothing"

Feb. 7th 2017

Yesterday morning we woke up at 5:00 AM like children on Christmas morning, all excited, unable to wait to open that present we had been looking at for what seemed to be a life time. The package started to open when we started the car and headed south at 6:15. We crossed the border into Buffalo, New York and even the dude at the gate had a smile on his face. It was a beautiful day for driving, the temperatures hovered around freezing for the first while and by the time we stopped in Breezewood, Penn. It was up to 54 degrees F and we were down to shirt sleeves while we walked the dog. We reached Hancock, Maryland, the place we had set for the end of a day’s drive, around noon and still in the excitement mode decided to carry on. In the package opening process analogy we are by that time down to the cardboard box. We reached Kym and the boys around 8:00 PM in Suffolk, VA. We will spend a few days here just playing with that cardboard box before we continue unwrapping that assumed gift full of nothingness.

So far, that absolute “nothing” has been absolutely amazing.

God bless you all, please keep praying for us as we pray for you.

Resurrection "The Blog"

Time to resurrect the blog.
“Why?” you might ask.
Now that’s a good question and I think I have a good answer. We’re on the road again. It’s been a year and a half since we last blogged. It’s not like we haven’t done anything during that time, just not anything to blog about. Let me just give you a quick look at what that year and a half looked like. Last time we blogged was on our return to Langley BC after almost 1 full year away on the road. After that we remained in Langley at Gateway catching up on things there. Then we went south to Dinuba Ca. where we volunteered at Gleanings for the Hungry, January through Mid-March and back to Gateway till June. We spent July and August volunteering at Bethel Gospel Camp in Northern Saskatchewan. And from there we moved lock, stock and barrel to Hamilton ON where we bought a house and have been serving at WEC Headquarters since. So there you have it, a year and a half gone by so fast it seems like only yesterday I sat at this same computer writing that last blog.
So now what? As I said,” We are on the road again!!” Well that’s not really true; it won’t be until the early hours of the 6th day of Feb. when we will point our car towards the south heading out on a vacation. There I said it, a vacation, I’m not sure I know what that is but I’m going to try to figure it out. I think I am grasping the concept. Unlike in the past we are not going somewhere to do something; we are apparently going somewhere to do “nothing”. Wow! What a concept, not going there to fix it, just going there to be there. So the question remains, what will we be doing while we are doing “nothing”?
Ok. This is a quick look at where we will be during our do “nothing” time. This is where you can help, if there are any suggestions on what “nothing” we should be doing in each of the following places. Orlando FL., Bahamas cruise, Daytona Beach FL and Cancun Mexico, please feel free to tell us about it. Any special attractions, any recommended must do things or even anyone we should make an attempt to see.
Also, while we are busy doing “nothing” please pray for us, first that we may figure out how and then that we will not become too accustom to it. Then pray for safe travel whether by land, sea or air. Yes, please pray that we will continue to enjoy each other’s companionship and that we may remain tolerant of one another. The day we arrive in Orlando I will have completed 70 consecutive revolutions around the sun, please pray for many more (70 more will do just fine).
I will let Gail check this over to see if there are one or two words not spelled correctly then I will see if I can remember how to post a blog.
Blessings to all

Erwin & Gail
